Detroit roots, gospel royalty
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Jacky Clark Chisholm grew up singing under the direction of her mother, the pioneering choral director Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. In the Church of God in Christ, Jacky — known affectionately as “Sweetie” — learned that a song could carry a sermon.
With her sisters, she formed The Clark Sisters, whose classics like “You Brought the Sunshine,” “Is My Living in Vain,” and “Blessed & Highly Favored” reshaped gospel music and earned multiple Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award.
